Description
Maize stripe is a significant viral disease affecting corn crops, caused by the Tenuivirus zeae pathogen. This virus disrupts the host's physiological processes, specifically interfering with vascular function. Due to its systemic nature, once an infection is established, the virus spreads rapidly throughout the plant, causing severe developmental issues.
The primary host for this virus is maize (Zea mays), although the pathogen can also survive in various wild grass species that grow near agricultural fields. These wild grasses act as an essential reservoir, allowing the virus to persist from one season to the next, even in the absence of corn crops.
Symptoms are manifested as elongated chlorotic stripes or bands on the leaves, which may turn necrotic in later stages. Infected plants typically exhibit stunting, leaf curling, and poor development of reproductive organs, leading to a significant reduction in grain yield and quality.
The transmission of the virus is exclusively mediated by insect vectors, most notably the corn delphacid or related species of leafhoppers. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and then transmit it to healthy individuals during subsequent feeding sessions. Warm and humid conditions are the most favorable for the vector's population growth.
