Description
Anthocercis mosaic virus (Tobamovirus anthocercis) is a viral pathogen belonging to the genus Tobamovirus. It is known to infect various plant species within the Solanaceae family. As with other members of this genus, the virus is highly stable and can persist in soil, infected plant residues, and seeds for an extended period.
The host range includes both wild species, particularly within the Anthocercis genus, and several cultivated crops within the nightshade family. The virus is an obligate parasite, relying entirely on the plant host's biological mechanisms for its replication, which leads to significant metabolic disruption within the plant tissues.
Symptoms of the infection primarily manifest as leaf mosaic patterns, characterized by irregular patches of light and dark green coloration. Other common signs include leaf distortion, curling, stunted growth, and a reduction in overall vigor. These changes adversely affect the photosynthetic process, ultimately decreasing the plant's yield potential and health.
Transmission of the virus occurs mainly through mechanical contact, such as handling plants with contaminated tools, hands, or through direct plant-to-plant contact in dense stands. Because Tobamoviruses are exceptionally hardy, they can survive unfavorable environmental conditions, making standard sanitation and hygiene protocols critical for managing outbreaks.
There are no chemical treatments available to cure plants infected with this virus. Control strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the use of virus-free seeds, strict sanitation of equipment, and the removal of host weeds from the field borders. Crop rotation and resistant cultivars remain the most effective methods for mitigating losses in agricultural production.
