Brugmansia mosaic virus (Tobamovirus brugmansiae) is a specific plant pathogen belonging to the Tobamovirus genus. This virus primarily affects plants within the Solanaceae family, specifically the Brugmansia species. It is a highly stable virus that causes systemic infection, disrupting the internal metabolic processes of the host plant.

The virus is of significant concern to ornamental plant nurseries and collectors. Because Brugmansia is valued for its dramatic floral displays and large, lush leaves, the infection significantly diminishes the aesthetic appeal and overall health of these plants, often rendering them unsuitable for sale or exhibition.

The disease is characterized by distinct mosaic patterns, featuring light green and yellow spotting on the foliage. Infected leaves often become curled, distorted, and stunted in size. In cases of chronic infection, the plant may show reduced vigor, shortened internodes, and poor flower production, which eventually leads to the decline of the entire specimen.

The transmission of this virus is primarily mechanical. It spreads through contaminated sap during pruning, pinching, or general handling. Because Tobamoviruses are remarkably resilient, the pathogen can persist on pruning shears, knives, and even surfaces in a greenhouse for extended periods, making secondary spread highly likely if hygiene is neglected.

Effective management relies entirely on prevention, as there is no chemical cure for plant viral infections. Control measures must include:

  • Regular and thorough sterilization of all pruning tools using approved virucidal agents.
  • Immediate removal and destruction (burning) of infected plants to prevent further spread.
  • Sourcing plant material from certified, virus-free nurseries.
  • Implementing strict quarantine procedures for new plants before introducing them into the main collection.
