Cactus tobamovirus (lat. Tobamovirus cacti) is a highly contagious viral pathogen affecting various species of succulents, particularly in the Cactaceae family. Belonging to the Tobamovirus genus, this virus is notoriously stable in the environment, capable of persisting for years in contaminated soil, plant debris, and on tools, making it a significant challenge for greenhouse management.
The virus infects various cactus species, causing systemic disruption within the host. Once the pathogen enters the plant tissues, it interferes with normal physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and nutrient transport, leading to a general decline in the plant's health and vigor.
Common symptoms of the infection often manifest as chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, or yellow spotting on the surface of the stem. Over time, affected cacti may show severe deformation, stunted growth, and necrotic lesions. In advanced stages, the plant's epidermis becomes discolored, and the apical meristem may die, resulting in the cessation of growth.
The transmission of this virus is primarily mechanical. It spreads through contaminated cutting tools, handling infected plants and then healthy ones, or even through contact between roots in shared growing media. Insects are not the primary vectors, but wounds caused by pests can serve as infection sites if the virus is present in the surrounding environment.
Management of Cactus tobamovirus relies entirely on strict biosecurity and preventive measures, as there is no chemical cure. Key strategies include sanitizing all cutting and pruning tools with appropriate disinfectants (e.g., high-concentration alcohol or bleach solutions), maintaining a quarantine period for new acquisitions, and immediately culling any plants showing characteristic symptoms to prevent spread.
