Tobamovirus capsici, commonly identified as the agent causing Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), is a highly persistent plant pathogen within the Tobamovirus genus. This virus is notorious for its stability, as it can remain infectious for extended periods in soil, contaminated seed lots, and on surfaces of tools or greenhouses, resisting common environmental stressors.
The primary hosts for this virus are various species of Capsicum, including bell and chili peppers. Tomato crops can also be affected. Once the virus enters a greenhouse facility, it can rapidly infect the entire population if strict sanitation protocols are not observed, often leading to total crop failure or severe yield quality degradation.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as a distinct mosaic pattern on leaves, displaying variegated shades of light and dark green. In severe cases, foliage becomes distorted, stunted, or crinkled. Fruit production is significantly impacted; affected fruits may appear dwarfed, distorted, or develop necrotic spots, rendering them unsuitable for market standards.
Transmission occurs exclusively through mechanical contact. The virus enters the plant cells through microscopic wounds caused by standard agricultural practices, such as pruning, thinning, or harvesting. Unlike many other plant viruses, it is not transmitted by common insect vectors like aphids; instead, the human factor—tools, clothing, and hands—is the primary driver of spread.
Management and prevention require a rigorous approach to agricultural hygiene:
- Use only certified, virus-free seeds and transplants.
- Implement strict sanitation of all tools using suitable disinfectants like trisodium phosphate or high-concentration bleach.
- Immediately rogue and destroy any plants showing viral symptoms.
- Restrict movement between infected and healthy greenhouse sectors.
- Ensure workers sanitize hands frequently during cultivation activities.
