The Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), taxonomically classified within the Tobamovirus genus, is the causal agent of this destructive plant disease. It is a highly stable virus, characterized by its remarkable ability to persist in soil, on structural greenhouse surfaces, and in contaminated seed lots for extended periods. It is considered a systemic viral infection that affects plant physiology and development.
Affected Crops
This virus predominantly targets species within the Cucurbitaceae family. Greenhouse-grown cucumbers are the most economically affected, though the pathogen frequently impacts watermelons, melons, squash, and pumpkins. Various weed species belonging to the same family may act as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to overwinter in greenhouse environments.
Symptoms and Signs of Infection
The hallmark of the infection is a characteristic mosaic pattern on leaves, presenting as a contrast between dark green and chlorotic (yellowish) tissue. As the infection progresses, leaves exhibit severe crinkling, stunting, and curling. Fruit symptoms include yellow mottling, surface unevenness, and significant malformation, rendering the produce unmarketable and reducing the total yield weight.
Conditions for Development and Transmission
CGMMV is predominantly transmitted mechanically. Human activity during crop management—such as pruning, tying, and harvesting—is the primary driver of spread, as the virus easily transfers via contaminated tools and hands. Furthermore, the virus can spread through root-to-root contact in soil and is readily transmitted by seed and pollen. High humidity and temperatures between 25-30°C provide the ideal environment for the virus to replicate rapidly.
Economic Impact and Control Measures
The virus can cause devastating losses in both greenhouse and open-field production. Since there are no chemical curatives to eliminate the virus within the plant tissue, management relies on rigorous preventative practices:
- Utilization of certified, virus-free seeds and planting material.
- Stringent sanitation protocols for greenhouses, including the disinfection of equipment and surfaces.
- Regular sanitization of tools between plant inspections or pruning operations using appropriate disinfectants.
- Immediate rogueing and destruction of infected plants to prevent further spread.
- Implementing long-term crop rotation and avoiding the use of the same soil for consecutive cucurbit crops.
