Description
The causal agent of this disease is the Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), previously referred to as Tobamovirus cucurbitae. It is a highly persistent pathogen within the Tobamovirus genus, characterized by its remarkable ability to survive for several years in soil, dry plant debris, and on seed surfaces, making it a persistent threat to agricultural production.
The virus primarily affects members of the Cucurbitaceae family. Major host crops include cucumbers, watermelons, melons, squash, and pumpkins. It is considered one of the most economically damaging viruses in both protected cropping systems and open-field cultivation, often leading to total loss of marketability.
Symptoms are typically characterized by a mosaic-like pattern on the leaves, featuring alternating light and dark green areas, often accompanied by leaf distortion. Infected fruit displays mottling, surface bumpiness, and stunted growth. Internally, the fruit may develop necrotic tissues or abnormal discoloration, significantly reducing yield quality.
Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical means: contact between healthy and infected plants, handling with contaminated tools, or contact with contaminated clothing and equipment. Furthermore, the virus is highly seed-borne, meaning that infected seeds can act as the primary inoculum for a new crop cycle, facilitating rapid spread under intensive greenhouse conditions.
Control strategies are strictly preventative as there are no chemical treatments available to cure infected plants. Effective management relies on the use of virus-free certified seeds, rigorous disinfection protocols for greenhouse structures and tools, and strict sanitation practices during pruning and harvesting. Infected plants must be rogued and disposed of promptly to prevent further secondary spread.
