Pepper spot virus, scientifically classified as Tobamovirus maculacapsici, is a significant viral pathogen that belongs to the Tobamovirus genus. This disease is known for causing systemic infections in host plants, leading to severe physiological stress and significant economic losses in vegetable production worldwide.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Solanaceae family, specifically peppers (Capsicum spp.). The virus is particularly problematic in both greenhouse environments and open-field cultivation, where environmental factors can facilitate its spread among susceptible plant populations.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as mosaic patterns on foliage, leaf distortion, chlorosis, and necrotic spots on stems and leaves. Infected plants often show stunted growth and deformed fruit, which significantly decreases the marketability and yield quality of the produce, creating substantial challenges for commercial growers.
