Fruit mottle tobamovirus (lat. Tobamovirus maculafructi) is a viral pathogen classified within the Tobamovirus genus. Like other members of this genus, it is highly stable in the environment and can survive for extended periods on contaminated surfaces, tools, or within plant debris.
The virus primarily affects solanaceous crops, with a particular economic impact on tomatoes and peppers. It is a major concern in intensive greenhouse production, where high plant density and regular handling provide ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the virus among susceptible hosts.
Key symptoms include distinctive mottle or mosaic patterns on the surface of developing fruits, which often renders the produce unmarketable. Foliage symptoms typically involve leaf chlorosis, mosaic patterns, and sometimes severe stunting or curling of the leaves, significantly reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Transmission of the virus is strictly mechanical. It spreads through physical contact during standard agricultural practices such as pruning, harvesting, and crop maintenance. Infected tools, clothing, or even contaminated hands of field workers are primary vectors for the dissemination of the virus throughout the crop cycle.
Currently, there are no curative chemical treatments for viral infections in plants, making management entirely preventative. Key strategies include the use of virus-free certified seeds, rigorous disinfection protocols for tools using bleach or trisodium phosphate, strict hygiene for personnel, and the prompt removal and destruction of symptomatic plants.
