Pepper tobamovirus (such as Paprika mild mottle virus) is a severe viral disease affecting major Solanaceous crops. As a member of the Tobamovirus genus, this pathogen is renowned for its environmental persistence. It can survive for years in soil, infected plant debris, and even on the surface or inside seeds, posing a constant threat to agricultural production.
The primary hosts of this virus include bell peppers, chili peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants. These crops are highly susceptible, and once the virus is introduced into a field or greenhouse, it can quickly establish itself within the plant population, leading to significant economic losses for commercial growers and home gardeners alike.
Symptoms of infection are distinct and include mosaic patterns of light and dark green on leaves, stunted plant growth, and severe leaf deformation. Fruit symptoms are particularly damaging, manifesting as irregular shapes, chlorotic patches, and necrotic lesions. Infected plants often produce fewer fruits, and the quality of the harvest is severely compromised.
The spread of the virus is primarily mechanical. It does not require insects to transmit; instead, it is easily spread through contaminated hands, clothing, garden tools, and even irrigation water.
