Passion fruit tobamovirus (Tobamovirus passiflorae) is a viral plant pathogen that primarily affects species within the Passiflora genus. Known for its high environmental stability, this virus can persist for long periods in soil, contaminated plant debris, and on various tools, making it a persistent threat to commercial cultivation.
The host range is primarily focused on passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) and related varieties. Once a plant is infected, the virus systemically colonizes its vascular tissues, interfering with essential physiological functions such as nutrient transport and photosynthesis, which leads to substantial yield losses.
Symptoms of the infection typically include leaf mottling, yellowing of the veins, and stunting of young shoots. Infected plants often show signs of severe developmental deformation, leaf curling, and a reduction in fruit size, rendering the crop unmarketable and weakening the overall health of the plant.
The virus is primarily transmitted through mechanical means. Direct contact during pruning, training, or general handling is the most frequent way the virus moves between plants.
