Tobamovirus rehmanniae
Description
Pathogen and disease type. The causative agent is the Rehmannia mosaic virus (ReMV), a member of the Tobamovirus genus. This virus is an obligate intracellular pathogen causing systemic infections. Tobamoviruses are characterized by their extreme stability and the ability to persist in the environment, making them difficult to manage once they establish in a cultivation area.
Affected crops. The primary host is Rehmannia glutinosa, a plant of significant medicinal value. While the virus has high host specificity, its ability to survive in plant debris means it can persist in soils or greenhouses, posing a chronic threat to successive planting cycles if sanitary protocols are not strictly observed.
Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include a distinct mosaic pattern on foliage, characterized by alternating light and dark green areas. Infected plants often exhibit leaf malformation, curling, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the overall development of the plant is inhibited, leading to significant reduction in the weight and quality of the medicinal roots.
Conditions for development and spread. ReMV is mechanically transmitted. It does not rely on insect vectors but spreads through contaminated hands, tools, and direct contact between healthy and diseased plants during cultivation. The virus is highly resistant to desiccation and heat, allowing it to survive for extended periods on farm equipment, in old plant debris, and within the topsoil.
Harmfulness and protection measures. The disease significantly reduces yield and raw material quality, leading to substantial economic losses. Since there is no cure for viral plant infections, management focuses strictly on prevention:
- Sourcing only certified virus-free propagation material.
- Rigorous sanitization of all gardening tools using appropriate chemical disinfectants.
- Immediate roguing and destruction of symptomatic plants to limit the spread of inoculum.
- Implementation of strict crop rotation cycles, avoiding susceptible species for several years.
- High standards of hygiene for workers to prevent the manual transfer of the virus.
