Streptocarpus tobamovirus

Streptocarpus tobamovirus (Tobamovirus streptocarpi) is a viral pathogen that poses a significant threat to plants belonging to the Gesneriaceae family. As a member of the Tobamovirus genus, this virus is highly contagious and relies on mechanical transmission to spread between hosts, as it does not typically rely on insect vectors in the way other plant viruses do.

The primary hosts for this virus are various species and hybrids of the Streptocarpus genus. Other closely related ornamental plants, including African violets (Saintpaulia), are also susceptible to this infection. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads systemically, invading the internal vascular tissues and interfering with cellular processes.

Symptoms of the infection are often visual, manifesting as distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, chlorotic mottling, and irregular yellow spots. Infected foliage may show severe distortion, curling, or thickening. The virus significantly inhibits the plant's flowering potential, leading to stunted flower stalks, malformed buds, and a reduced number of blooms, eventually weakening the entire plant.

The spread of Tobamovirus streptocarpi is primarily driven by human activity during plant care. It can be easily transmitted by contaminated pruning tools, contaminated pots, or simply by touching an infected plant and then handling a healthy one. These viruses are notoriously stable and can remain infectious on surfaces and in soil for extended periods, making secondary infection very common in indoor collections.

There is currently no cure for viral infections in plants, so management relies exclusively on sanitation and prevention strategies:

• Strict quarantine procedures for all new plants entering a collection.
• Mandatory disinfection of all cutting tools with appropriate disinfectants or flame sterilization.
• Avoiding physical contact between plants on benches or display shelves.
• Immediate removal and safe disposal of any plants exhibiting symptoms to prevent further spread within the facility.
