Description
The causal agent of this disease is the Tobamovirus viridimaculae, which belongs to the Tobamovirus genus. This virus is characterized by extreme environmental stability, allowing it to persist for long periods in soil, debris, or on contaminated surfaces of greenhouse infrastructure.
The virus primarily affects crops belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumbers, zucchini, melons, and watermelons. It is a major concern for greenhouse production, where the intensive nature of farming facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen between closely spaced plants.
Symptoms typically manifest as mosaic-like mottling on leaves, featuring a pattern of light and dark green spots. In severe cases, foliage becomes distorted and crinkled, internodes shorten, and the overall plant vigor significantly declines, leading to stunted growth and poor development.
The transmission of the virus is almost exclusively mechanical. It spreads through contaminated seeds, infected pruning tools, clothing, and direct physical contact between plants. High humidity and temperature conditions often exacerbate the viral replication process within the plant tissues.
The economic damage is severe, as the virus causes a marked reduction in both yield quantity and fruit quality. Affected plants produce misshapen and mottled fruits that do not meet market standards, leading to substantial losses for commercial growers and a decline in crop profitability.
