Pepper tobravirus (Tobravirus capsici) is a significant viral pathogen that targets Solanaceous crops, primarily peppers. It represents a serious threat to greenhouse production and open-field vegetable farming, often causing substantial yield losses and reducing the market quality of the harvested produce.

The primary host range includes various cultivars of Capsicum. However, the virus can also colonize tomatoes and other related Solanaceous species. Due to its wide host range and ability to persist in the soil environment, the virus remains a constant challenge for growers practicing continuous cultivation in the same plots.

Symptoms of the infection typically include chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on leaves, and necrotic ring spots on the fruit surface. Infected plants often show stunted growth and irregular development of internodes, which directly interferes with the photosynthesis process and overall vigor of the pepper plants.

The disease is transmitted primarily through soil-borne nematodes belonging to the genera Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus. These vectors facilitate the movement of the virus between plant roots in the soil. Mechanical transmission through pruning tools, hands, and contaminated equipment also plays a critical role in the rapid spread of the virus within a crop.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this disease. Strategies include the use of virus-free planting stock, the implementation of strict sanitation practices for tools, and managing nematode populations in the soil through chemical or cultural methods. Furthermore, selecting resistant cultivars and maintaining a long rotation cycle are vital components of a successful long-term prevention program.
