Description
Tomato necrosis is a severe condition often linked to viral pathogens, most notably the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV). This disease impacts the plant's vascular system, leading to rapid tissue death and significant physiological disruption that inhibits the plant's ability to produce viable fruit.
The host range for this virus is exceptionally broad, encompassing many solanaceous crops such as peppers, eggplants, and potatoes, as well as a variety of ornamental plants and weeds. This wide host diversity makes it a persistent challenge in vegetable production areas, as the reservoir of infection is difficult to eliminate.
Symptoms are typically characterized by necrotic spots and streaks on stems, petioles, and leaves, often accompanied by a bronze discoloration. As the infection progresses, leaf distortion and apical necrosis (dieback) become evident. Fruit displays distinctive ringspots or mottled patterns, rendering the harvest commercially unacceptable.
The spread of the disease is intrinsically tied to the population dynamics of thrips, which act as the primary vectors for the virus. Environmental factors, such as sustained warm temperatures, facilitate the rapid reproduction of thrips, leading to increased transmission rates and potentially catastrophic outbreaks within susceptible crop fields.
Management strategies must focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key actions include the use of resistant or tolerant cultivars, strict control of thrips through insecticide rotation, and the implementation of weed management programs around the perimeter of the field. Additionally, early detection and destruction of infected plants are essential to mitigate spread.
