Description
Tombusviridae is a family of plant viruses known for their small, non-enveloped, icosahedral particles containing a single-stranded RNA genome. These pathogens are remarkably stable and can persist in soil, water, and dried plant debris for extended periods, making them difficult to eradicate once introduced.
These viruses affect a diverse range of botanical hosts, including economically important crops such as tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various fruit trees. The infection systemic nature causes systemic physiological changes that negatively impact the overall vigor and reproductive output of the host plant.
Key symptoms of Tombusviridae infection include leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), necrotic lesions, and severe stunting. One of the most classic signs, particularly in tomatoes, is the «bushy stunt» effect, characterized by shortened internodes and profuse lateral branching, which significantly reduces total harvest yield.
Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical contact, such as contaminated tools, hands, or irrigation water. Unlike many other viruses that require insect vectors like aphids or whiteflies, tombusviruses are highly efficient at spreading through mechanical wounding and root-to-root contact within infected soil.
Effective management strategies focus on strict sanitation. Growers must ensure the use of certified, virus-free seeds and seedlings. Regular disinfection of pruning tools and equipment, along with the prompt removal and burning of symptomatic plants, remains the standard practice to curb the spread of the virus within a greenhouse or field environment.
