The causative agent of this disease is the Carnation ringspot virus, classified under the Tombusvirus genus. It acts as a systemic pathogen, colonizing the host plant's vascular system and severely disrupting cellular functions, which leads to stunted growth and impaired photosynthetic activity.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Dianthus genus, particularly commercial carnation cultivars. While these plants are the main target, the virus is known for its ability to persist in various environmental conditions, making it a persistent challenge for ornamental plant nurseries and professional flower growers.

Symptomatology includes the development of chlorotic rings, mosaic-like patterns, and streaks on the leaves. In more advanced stages of the infection, the plant may exhibit leaf deformation, flower malformation, and a general loss of vigor. Infected plants often fail to reach their decorative potential, rendering them unmarketable.

The transmission of this virus occurs primarily through mechanical means. Handling plants with contaminated tools, soil contact, or during vegetative propagation are the most common routes of infection. Because the virus is highly stable, it can easily persist on greenhouse surfaces and equipment for extended periods if proper sanitization is neglected.
