Petunia asteroid mosaic virus (PeAMV) is a plant pathogen classified within the genus Tombusvirus. It is a highly contagious virus that affects the vascular systems of host plants, disrupting nutrient flow and causing severe physiological stress in susceptible botanical species.

The primary host for this pathogen is the petunia (Petunia x hybrida), although the virus exhibits a broad host range including various decorative flowering species. Its ability to infect multiple hosts makes it a persistent threat in both commercial greenhouse production and amateur gardening environments.

Clinical signs of infection often manifest as chlorotic mosaic patterns, ring spots, and significant tissue distortion. Infected plants typically display stunted overall growth, shortened internodes, and altered flowering patterns, rendering the crops commercially non-viable and aesthetically damaged.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical inoculation during routine agricultural practices, such as handling, pruning, or using contaminated equipment. The virus is notably stable and can persist in soil, water, and debris, facilitating its spread across entire greenhouse benches if not managed strictly.

Management strategy relies heavily on proactive hygiene:

  • Strict sanitation of all tools and containers using effective disinfectants.
  • Immediate roguing and destruction of symptomatic plants to eliminate the inoculum source.
  • Use of virus-indexed, certified disease-free propagation material.
  • Implementing strict quarantine zones for new incoming nursery stock.
