Topocuvirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and represent a significant challenge in modern phytopathology. They function as systemic pathogens that interfere with the normal development of the host plant at the cellular level.

The primary hosts of Topocuvirus include various species of the Solanaceae family, with tomatoes being the most economically affected crop. The virus relies on a wide host range, often persisting in wild vegetation or weeds, which function as environmental reservoirs for the pathogen.

Typical symptoms of a Topocuvirus infection include mosaic patterns on leaves, severe leaf curling (leaf curl), stunted growth, and yellowish discoloration known as chlorosis. The fruits produced by infected plants often exhibit deformation and reduced size, which directly correlates to substantial yield loss for farmers.

The spread of the virus is typically facilitated by insect vectors, primarily whiteflies. The virus is acquired by the insect while feeding on an infected plant and is then transmitted to healthy hosts during subsequent feeding sessions. Environmental factors such as high temperature significantly increase the activity of these vectors, accelerating the spread of the disease.
