Description
Torradovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the family Secoviridae that causes severe necrotic symptoms in various vegetable crops. The virus, characterized by a bipartite positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome, is named after the Spanish/Portuguese term for "toasted," reflecting the scorched appearance of infected plant tissues.
This pathogen primarily targets plants in the Solanaceae family, with commercial tomato crops being the most susceptible. The virus is economically significant because it can lead to devastating crop losses in both open fields and greenhouses, forcing farmers to implement strict biosecurity protocols.
The diagnostic symptoms of a Torradovirus infection include localized chlorosis, severe leaf necrosis, and stunted growth of the plant. In many cases, infected plants exhibit a mosaic-like pattern and leaf curling, while fruit development is severely hampered, resulting in misshapen, unmarketable produce.
The transmission of the virus is strictly mediated by whitefly vectors, such as Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and can transmit it to healthy hosts within minutes. Because whiteflies thrive in warm, sheltered environments, greenhouse production systems are particularly vulnerable to rapid viral spread.
Effective management relies on a multifaceted Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:
- Exclusion of vectors through fine-mesh insect screens.
- Strategic use of systemic and contact insecticides to control whitefly populations.
- Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected plants.
- Monitoring of alternative weed hosts around the perimeter of the crop.
Since there are no curative treatments for viral infections in plants, prevention is the only viable economic strategy. Growers should prioritize the use of certified, virus-free seeds and implement quarantine procedures for new plant introductions to maintain the health of their crops.
