Tomato torradovirus (Torradovirus lycopersici) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Torradovirus genus. It is primarily known for causing severe damage to tomato crops, significantly impacting yield and fruit quality. This disease poses a significant challenge for modern horticulture due to its rapid spread and persistence in agro-ecosystems.
The virus is transmitted by insect vectors, most notably the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). The virus operates in a semi-persistent manner, where the vector acquires the virus by feeding on infected plant tissues and subsequently transmits it to healthy plants. Understanding the life cycle of the whitefly is crucial for managing the disease's spread.
