Trichovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses characterized by filamentous virions. These viruses are known to cause systemic diseases in perennial woody plants, with members such as Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) being of significant economic importance in pomology and fruit production worldwide.
The primary hosts for these viruses include fruit trees belonging to the Rosaceae family. Infections are most commonly observed in apples, pears, cherries, and plums. While some cultivars may remain asymptomatic carriers, others exhibit severe physiological disruption, which significantly impacts the health and longevity of the trees.
Symptomatology involves various foliar abnormalities, including chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, vein clearing, and necrotic rings. In severe cases, growers may observe stunted growth, irregular fruit development, and limb dieback. The expression of these symptoms often depends on the host cultivar, the specific viral strain, and environmental stressors.
