Description

The causal agent of this disease is Trichovirus armeniacae, a virus belonging to the Betaflexiviridae family. It is a highly systemic plant pathogen that disrupts the physiological and metabolic processes of the host tree, significantly reducing its health and productivity over time.

The primary hosts of this virus are stone fruit trees, including apricot, peach, and plum. Because the virus is systemic, it infiltrates all parts of the tree, making it difficult to isolate or treat once the plant is thoroughly infected. The persistence of the virus in perennial tissues allows it to cause long-term economic damage to orchards.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear on leaves as chlorotic spots, rings, or vein banding. On the fruit, the disease manifests as distinct skin depressions, necrotic spots, and malformations. These symptoms degrade the quality of the fruit, making it unmarketable, and often cause premature fruit drop, which significantly reduces the harvest.

The spread of the virus occurs primarily through two channels: mechanical grafting using infected plant material and biological vectors such as aphids. These insects transmit the virus while feeding, facilitating its movement across the orchard. Environmental conditions that favor aphid population growth contribute significantly to the rapid spread of the disease within and between orchards.

Management and prevention focus entirely on phytosanitary measures, as there is no chemical cure for viral infections in plants. Orchard owners must prioritize the use of certified virus-free rootstocks and scions, practice rigorous control of aphid populations, and implement strict sanitation protocols, such as disinfecting pruning equipment between trees to avoid mechanical transmission.
