It is a systemic viral disease that infects the vascular tissues of host plants, causing severe disruptions in metabolic pathways, photosynthetic activity, and nutrient transport throughout the entire plant system.

The virus primarily affects various species of the Poaceae family. Key agricultural targets include wheat, barley, and rye. In addition to cultivated crops, the virus effectively survives in perennial and annual wild grasses, which act as essential reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to persist and re-infect new crop cycles each year.

Symptoms and signs of infection
Infected plants typically display mosaic patterns, yellow streaking along leaf veins, and stunted growth. Infected tillers are often significantly shorter than healthy ones, and the heads may become sterile or malformed. These visible signs often manifest early in the season, drastically reducing the plant's capacity for proper grain filling.

Development and transmission
Transmission of Tritimovirus eqlidense is mediated by eriophyid mites, primarily the wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella). These vectors acquire the virus through feeding on infected tissues and subsequently transmit it to healthy hosts. Environmental factors, such as dry and warm conditions, accelerate mite reproduction and movement, thereby increasing the rate of viral spread across the fields.
