Description
The causative agent of the disease is the Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), which belongs to the Tritimovirus genus. It is a dangerous systemic viral disease that disrupts physiological processes in the plant, leading to a severe reduction in grain crop yields and economic losses.
The primary hosts are common and durum wheat, but the virus also infects barley, proso millet, oats, and various wild grassy weeds. These wild grasses often act as a reservoir for the virus during the off-season, ensuring the pathogen survives and spreads throughout agricultural regions.
Typical symptoms appear as intermittent yellow or pale green streaks and patches on the leaves, aligned parallel to the veins. Over time, affected leaves may turn completely yellow, curl, and die. Infected plants exhibit significant stunting, and spike development is often delayed or remains sterile, failing to produce grain.
The virus is transmitted by the wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella). Both larvae and adult mites transmit the virus by feeding on infected plants and then migrating to healthy seedlings. The spread of the disease is closely linked to weather conditions: dry and warm autumns promote rapid mite reproduction and early infection of winter wheat crops.
Effective management relies entirely on cultural practices, as there are no direct chemical treatments for plant viruses. Key control measures include:
- Eliminating volunteer wheat and grassy weeds prior to winter planting
- Planting at optimal dates to avoid peak mite activity
- Using resistant wheat varieties where available
- Maintaining spatial isolation between new fields and areas with infected volunteers
