Description
Rice tungro is a severe viral disease caused by the synergistic combination of two viruses: Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) and Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV). It is considered one of the most destructive viral diseases in rice production, capable of causing substantial yield losses if not managed effectively.
The disease is transmitted in a semi-persistent manner primarily by leafhoppers, most notably the green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens. The insect acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant and can transmit it to healthy plants immediately after, making the spread of the virus within a field extremely rapid.
Infected plants exhibit distinct symptoms, including yellowing or orange-yellow discoloration of the leaves, which typically starts from the tip and extends downward. The plants show significant stunting, reduced tiller numbers, and often produce delayed or incomplete panicles, resulting in poor grain filling or sterility.
Disease outbreaks are closely linked to the population dynamics of the leafhopper vector. High humidity, warm temperatures, and the availability of alternative hosts or weed species that harbor the virus create favorable conditions for the disease to propagate, especially in regions with continuous cropping cycles.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest and disease control. This includes the use of resistant rice cultivars, adjusting planting dates to avoid peak vector activity, and sanitation practices to remove reservoir hosts. In endemic areas, the application of insecticides to control leafhopper populations is essential to reduce the rate of virus transmission during the early vegetative stage of the crop.
