Description
Rice tungro is a severe viral disease that significantly impacts rice production worldwide, particularly in tropical regions. It is primarily caused by a complex interaction between two viruses, the Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and the Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV), which collectively lead to the characteristic stunting and discoloration of the plants.
The host range is primarily limited to rice (Oryza sativa), though certain wild grass species can also act as reservoirs for the pathogen. The disease affects the plants at various growth stages, but the impact is most devastating when infection occurs during the early vegetative phase, leading to stunted tillering and poor grain yield.
Key indicators of the infection include chlorosis, specifically a yellow to orange-yellow discoloration starting from the leaf tips. Infected plants exhibit severe stunting, reduced plant height, and smaller, often sterile or incompletely filled panicles, which significantly compromises the overall quality and quantity of the harvest.
The virus is transmitted in a semi-persistent manner by various species of green leafhoppers, most notably Nephotettix virescens. Environmental conditions that favor the rapid multiplication and movement of these insect vectors, such as warm temperatures and high humidity, significantly correlate with the outbreaks of the disease.
Integrated disease management is essential to minimize yield losses:
- Cultivation of resistant or tolerant rice cultivars
- Rigorous control of green leafhopper populations using chemical insecticides
- Removal of infected volunteer plants and alternative weed hosts
- Synchronized planting times to break the cycle of infection
- Implementation of community-based crop sanitation practices
