Description

Turnip curly top (genus Turncurtovirus) is a group of plant-pathogenic viruses belonging to the Geminiviridae family. These pathogens are characterized by a circular, single-stranded DNA genome and are known for causing significant economic damage to various agricultural crops worldwide, particularly in warm regions.

The virus has a wide host range, primarily affecting plants in the Amaranthaceae and Brassicaceae families. Key crops susceptible to the infection include sugar beet, table beet, turnip, spinach, and several other leafy vegetables. Economic losses occur when the virus restricts plant development, leading to reduced yields and poor crop quality.

Clinical symptoms of the infection often manifest as leaf curling, chlorosis (yellowing of leaf margins), and severe stunted growth. Plants often exhibit a bunched appearance due to shortened internodes. In severe cases, the infected crop may fail to produce marketable roots or seeds, rendering the fields unproductive.

The transmission mechanism of Turncurtovirus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, mainly leafhoppers like Circulifer tenellus. The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding on infected plants and is then transmitted to healthy hosts. Environmental factors such as drought and high temperatures increase vector activity, leading to widespread infection outbreaks.

Management and prevention of the disease require a strategic approach, as there is no cure for viral plant infections once established:

  • Implement integrated pest management (IPM) to suppress leafhopper populations.
  • Remove weed hosts from field margins that harbor the virus during off-seasons.
  • Utilize virus-resistant cultivars if available for the specific region.
  • Establish spatial isolation and adjust planting dates to avoid peak periods of vector migration.
