Description

Tymovirus is a genus of plant-pathogenic viruses containing single-stranded RNA that cause systemic infections in a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops. The pathogen primarily affects plants from the families Brassicaceae, Solanaceae, and others. This disease belongs to the category of viral infections that spread systemically through the plant's vascular system, disrupting metabolism and photosynthesis processes.

This genus of viruses affects important crops such as crucifers (rapeseed, turnip, cabbage), grapevines, as well as certain legumes and ornamental flowering plants. The most well-known member of the group is the Turnip yellow mosaic virus. The pathogen has the ability to infect the entire plant, penetrating all tissues, including meristems, which leads to a significant weakening of the crop's immune system.

Key symptoms of the infection include:

  • mosaic spotting or mottling of the leaves;
  • leaf deformation and curling;
  • stunted growth and overall developmental delay;
  • yellowing of tissues (chlorosis);
  • reduction in flowering and fruit yield.

The spread of Tymoviruses in agricultural ecosystems occurs primarily through mechanical damage and also via specific insect vectors, most notably beetles from the Chrysomelidae family. An important factor in the development of the infection is the presence of hidden viral reservoirs in the form of weeds, where the pathogen can persist during the growing season and survive the winter.

The harmfulness of the disease lies in the significant reduction of crop yields and the deterioration of produce quality. Effective protection against Tymoviruses is based on prevention: using virus-free planting material, timely control of insect vectors and weeds, and strictly adhering to hygiene protocols during agricultural operations (disinfecting tools).
