The causative agent of the disease is Tymovirus abelmoschi, a virus classified under the genus Tymovirus. This viral pathogen causes systemic infection in host plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions that hinder the normal development of the plant and result in significant agricultural losses.

The primary host of this virus is okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). However, other plants within the Malvaceae family are also susceptible to this pathogen, acting as secondary hosts that harbor the virus and allow it to persist in the environment even in the absence of the main crop.

Symptoms of the infection typically include distinct mosaic patterning on the leaves, characterized by light and dark green patches. Other signs include leaf curling, malformation, stunted growth of the plant, shortening of internodes, and a drastic reduction in fruit formation and development.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by insect vectors, such as aphids, which acquire and spread the virus while feeding on infected plant sap. Mechanical transmission during pruning, weeding, or other agricultural activities can also spread the virus effectively across a plantation.
