Description
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a major plant pathogen known for its systemic effect and an exceptionally wide host range, affecting over 1200 plant species worldwide. As a highly persistent and adaptable virus, it presents a significant economic threat to agricultural production, particularly in intensive vegetable farming systems where high host density facilitates rapid disease transmission.
The virus primarily targets cucurbits, solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers, and various ornamental plants. By disrupting the normal physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and nutrient translocation, the virus significantly reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the host, leading to stunted growth and severely reduced yields in infested areas.
Symptoms typically include a distinct mosaic pattern on leaves, characterized by alternating dark and light green patches, leaf deformation, curling, and overall stunted development. In severe cases, the fruits exhibit mottling, wart-like protrusions, and irregular shapes, which drastically diminish their market value and sensory characteristics for consumption.
The primary mode of transmission is via aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner, allowing the virus to be transmitted within seconds of feeding. Additionally, the virus is easily spread mechanically through contaminated pruning tools, human handling, and contact between infected and healthy tissues, especially in tightly spaced greenhouse environments.
Effective management relies on a multi-faceted strategy because there are no curative treatments for viral infections once a plant is infected. Protective measures include strictly monitoring and controlling aphid populations, utilizing virus-free planting material, rogueing out infected plants immediately upon symptom detection, and maintaining rigorous sanitation protocols for all agricultural tools to limit mechanical transmission.
