Lettuce umbravirus (Umbravirus lactucae) is a viral plant pathogen that primarily infects species of the Asteraceae family. This virus is characterized by a specific biology, often relying on helper viruses from the Luteoviridae family to facilitate its systemic movement and transmission within the host plant tissues.
The main crop affected by this pathogen is lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The virus can cause significant economic losses in both commercial field production and greenhouse cultivation, leading to reduced yield and poor quality of harvested produce, which often fails to meet market standards.
Key symptoms of the infection include pronounced leaf chlorosis, plant stunting, and curling or distortion of the foliage. Infected plants are unable to develop normal heads, and in cases of early-season infection, the crop remains largely underdeveloped and unsuitable for harvest.
