Description

Varicosavirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the family Alphaflexiviridae. These pathogens are known for causing significant physiological disruptions in plants by hijacking the host's cellular machinery to replicate, leading to distinct morphological changes that characterize the viral infection.

The primary host for this pathogen is lettuce (Lactuca sativa), where it causes a condition known as big vein disease. While the virus can be found in various environments, it is most prevalent in intensive lettuce-producing regions. The virus persists in the soil and infects new plants through the root system, making it a challenging soil-borne problem.

Symptoms are identified by the clearing and enlargement of leaf veins, which become translucent and thickened. This unique varicose appearance is often accompanied by leaf puckering, stunting of the plant, and a reduction in the overall size of the head, ultimately leading to significant yield losses in commercial production.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on the soil-borne chytrid fungus Olpidium brassicae, which acts as the virus vector. The virus particles reside within the fungal zoospores. When environmental conditions, such as high soil moisture and cool temperatures, favor fungal activity, the virus is effectively transmitted into the plant roots.

Management of Varicosavirus focuses on vector control and host resistance. Key preventive measures include:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars.
  • Applying soil sterilization techniques like steam treatment or solarization.
  • Implementing strict sanitation to prevent the movement of infested soil.
  • Optimizing irrigation to reduce excessive moisture that supports fungal vector reproduction.
Integrated pest management remains the most reliable strategy for long-term control.
