Description

Citrus vein enation and woody gall is a viral disease caused by the Citrus vein enation virus (CVEV). This pathogen affects the structural development of various citrus varieties, leading to localized tissue proliferation known as enations and woody galls on stems and trunks.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are species within the Citrus genus. While some varieties may remain asymptomatic carriers, others exhibit significant growth suppression, which directly impacts the productivity and longevity of citrus orchards globally.

Clinical signs include small, ridge-like outgrowths on the underside of leaves along the main veins, known as enations. Additionally, the disease causes woody, corky growths (galls) to appear on twigs and limbs, which can restrict sap flow and lead to the eventual decline of the plant's structural integrity.

The disease is primarily transmitted by aphids, most notably the brown citrus aphid (Toxoptera citricida). In commercial settings, transmission also occurs through the use of infected budwood during grafting operations, making the selection of virus-free nursery stock a critical component of disease management.
