Description
The Duocordyline virus (Velarivirus duocordylinae) is a plant-pathogenic virus categorized within the Velarivirus genus of the Closteroviridae family. As a systemic pathogen, it primarily infects the phloem tissues of the host plant, disrupting the transport of nutrients and severely affecting the metabolic health of the organism.
This virus predominantly impacts plants within the Amaryllidaceae family, specifically those in the Duocordyline genus. Because the infection is systemic, the virus moves throughout the entire vascular system, causing long-term damage that can persist through seasons if the host is a perennial plant.
Symptoms of Velarivirus duocordylinae typically present as mosaic patterns, chlorotic leaf spots, and stunting of the plant's vegetative parts. The reduction in photosynthetic efficiency leads to smaller blooms, twisted foliage, and an overall decrease in the plant's vigor, which can eventually lead to the plant's death if the viral load is sufficiently high.
Transmission of the virus is driven by hemipteran insect vectors, such as aphids and mealybugs, which ingest the virus while feeding and transmit it to healthy plants.
