Description

Viroids are subviral plant pathogens consisting solely of a short strand of circular, single-stranded RNA without a protein coat. Unlike viruses, they lack protein-coding capacity and rely entirely on host cell mechanisms for replication, making them highly specialized parasites of the plant kingdom.

These agents attack a wide variety of crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, grapevines, chrysanthemums, and citrus trees. They are known for causing significant economic damage, such as the potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) and the hop stunt viroid (HSVd), which can compromise yield quality and quantity globally.

Symptoms of viroid infection vary widely depending on the plant species and the specific strain. Common manifestations include stunting, leaf curling, leaf chlorosis, fruit distortion, and bark cracking. Because symptoms can resemble nutritional deficiencies or viral infections, laboratory testing is often required for an accurate diagnosis.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical vectors, such as contaminated pruning tools, human contact, or via infected seeds and pollen. In protected cultivation systems, such as greenhouses, the close proximity of plants facilitates rapid secondary spread, making containment challenging once an infection is introduced.

There are no chemical treatments available to cure plants infected with viroids. Therefore, farm management must prioritize preventive biosecurity and hygiene practices to stop the mechanical spread of these pathogens, ensuring the health and viability of the agricultural environment.
