Cucumber mosaic virus
Description
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most widespread plant viruses in the world, known for its ability to infect a vast range of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. As a member of the Bromoviridae family, it causes significant physiological disruptions, leading to stunted growth and reduced crop yields.
The host range of CMV is incredibly broad, encompassing over 1,200 species of plants. Key affected agricultural crops include cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, melons, and beans. Additionally, many ornamental plants and wild weed species serve as year-round reservoirs for the virus, making eradication extremely difficult.
The hallmark of CMV infection is the mosaic pattern on foliage, consisting of light and dark green areas. Symptoms often include leaf curling, distortion (frequently called "shoe-string" leaf), and stunted growth. Infected fruits often exhibit mottling, warty appearance, and distortion, rendering them unmarketable and significantly reducing yield quality.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors, which acquire the virus in a non-persistent manner after feeding on an infected plant for just seconds. The virus can also be spread mechanically through contact with contaminated tools, workers' hands, or sap from damaged plants during cultivation and pruning activities.
- Regular monitoring and management of aphid populations using insecticides.
- Elimination of weeds that act as alternate hosts for both the virus and aphids.
- Use of resistant or tolerant crop cultivars and certified virus-free seeds.
- Removal and destruction of symptomatic plants immediately upon detection.
- Strict hygiene protocols, including disinfecting tools and equipment between rows.
The economic impact of Cucumber mosaic virus is severe due to the inability to cure infected plants. Management must focus on preventative measures, as the rapid spread by insects and mechanical contact can lead to field-wide infections in a very short period, causing substantial losses for growers.
