Description
Pathogen and type of disease. Raspberry alpharubivirus (Vitivirus alpharubi) is a viral pathogen classified within the Vitivirus genus. This disease is systemic, meaning it colonizes the vascular tissues of the host plant, significantly disrupting physiological processes such as nutrient translocation and overall development.
Susceptible crops. The primary host for this virus is the raspberry plant (Rubus idaeus). The virus can often be detected in complex infections alongside other viral pathogens, which complicates diagnostic efforts and intensifies the stress placed on the host plant's metabolism.
Symptoms and signs of infection. Infected plants typically exhibit various foliar symptoms, including chlorosis, mosaic patterns, and crinkling or distortion of the leaves. In severe cases, the plants may show stunted growth, reduced vigor, and a noticeable decrease in the length of internodes, leading to a diminished plant structure.
Conditions for development and harmfulness. Transmission of Vitivirus alpharubi mainly occurs through the movement of infected plant propagation material and via specific insect vectors. The impact on crop health is severe, resulting in significant yield losses, poor berry quality, and long-term decline in the productivity of the entire raspberry plantation.
Protection and prevention measures. Because there are no effective chemical treatments to cure viral infections once they are established, prevention is critical. Growers must prioritize:
- sourcing virus-free certified nursery stock;
- controlling insect vectors to prevent spread;
- routinely scouting and rogueing infected plants to eliminate the source of inoculum;
- maintaining high sanitation standards within the berry field.
