Description
Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1 (GLRaV-1), categorized under Vitivirus alphavitis, is a major pathogen affecting grapevines worldwide. The virus primarily colonizes the phloem tissue, disrupting the translocation of nutrients and photosynthates, which eventually leads to physiological dysfunction of the vine.
The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The virus is highly persistent, and once a plant is infected, it remains a carrier for the rest of its life, serving as a reservoir for further transmission within the vineyard.
Symptoms are most visible during the later stages of the growing season. Typical signs include the downward rolling of leaves, reddening or purpling of the interveinal leaf tissue in red varieties, and chlorosis in white varieties. The leaves often become thicker and more brittle than those of healthy plants.
Transmission of the virus occurs mainly through two routes: propagation using infected vegetative material and the activity of insect vectors. Mealybugs and scale insects act as the primary vectors, acquiring the virus while feeding on infected phloem and transmitting it to healthy vines during subsequent feeding sessions.
The economic impact of this virus is significant. Infections lead to reduced crop yields, poor sugar accumulation in grapes, and poor ripening of the canes. Consequently, the affected vines suffer from reduced vigor, lower cold tolerance, and overall decline in vineyard longevity.
Management and prevention strategies include:
- Planting certified virus-free nursery stock.
- Implementing rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) to control mealybug populations.
- Rogueing infected vines to remove sources of the virus.
- Sanitizing pruning equipment to prevent mechanical transmission.
- Ensuring quarantine protocols are followed for new vineyard imports.
