Description
Vitivirus betavitis is a viral pathogen belonging to the Vitivirus genus that affects grapevine plants globally. As a systemic infection, the virus spreads through the vascular system of the vine, causing long-term physiological stress and compromising the overall health and yield of the vineyard.
The primary host for this virus is Vitis vinifera. The infection is often persistent and can remain latent for extended periods, meaning that infected vines may not display obvious symptoms for years while still serving as a source of inoculum for other nearby healthy grapevines.
Typical symptoms include leaf chlorosis, mosaic patterns, stunted vine growth, and poor wood maturation. In severe cases, the infected vines show signs of decline, characterized by shorter internodes, reduced leaf size, and significant yield loss due to poor fruit set and cluster development.
The transmission of this virus occurs primarily via infected propagation material such as scions and rootstocks. Additionally, the virus is known to be transmitted by insect vectors, specifically mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which transmit the virus while feeding on the phloem sap of the grapevine.
Management strategies focus on preventive measures, as there is no chemical cure for viral infections once established. Essential steps include sourcing certified virus-free planting material, implementing strict quarantine protocols, controlling mealybug populations, and removing and destroying symptomatic vines to limit the spread of the virus.
