Pathogen and disease type. Acacia vitivirus (Vitivirus viarracaciae) is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Vitivirus, family Betaflexiviridae. It is a systemic plant disease that disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to significant physiological stress and hindering normal development at the cellular level.

Host plants. The virus primarily affects various species of the genus Acacia. It poses a particular risk to both native stands and ornamental acacia species used in horticulture. Its impact can be observed across different stages of plant growth, often leading to decline in both young saplings and mature, previously healthy trees.

Symptoms and signs. The characteristic symptoms of the infection include chlorotic mosaic patterns on the foliage, which may range from pale green spots to distinct yellow mottling. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and early leaf drop. In severe cases, the overall architecture of the tree becomes sparse due to impaired nutrient uptake and reduced photosynthetic activity.

Conditions for development and spread. Transmission is predominantly biological, involving sap-sucking insects that act as vectors. These insects acquire the virus from infected hosts and transmit it to healthy plants during feeding. Mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools or contact between injured plants is another common route for the virus to enter new nursery stocks or forest areas.

Harmfulness, protection and prevention. The primary economic harm is the degradation of plant vitality, making the acacia trees susceptible to secondary pathogens and climate-related stressors. Effective disease management involves several key strategies:

  • Strict sanitation protocols, including the immediate removal of symptomatic trees.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control populations of insect vectors.
  • Sourcing plant material only from certified, virus-tested nurseries.
  • Sterilizing all pruning equipment between trees to prevent the mechanical transmission of the pathogen.
