Campanula waikavirus (Waikavirus campanulae) is a specialized viral pathogen belonging to the Waikavirus genus within the Secoviridae family. It is a systemic infectious disease characterized by the presence of single-stranded RNA, which primarily affects the vascular system and cellular metabolism of plants within the Campanulaceae family.

The primary host range for this virus consists of various ornamental bellflower species, particularly Campanula rotundifolia and its horticultural varieties. Because the virus can establish latent infections in some specimens, it often poses a hidden threat to garden centers, nurseries, and public park collections where diverse species are grown in close proximity.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct foliar mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, and irregular leaf deformation. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and poor vigor. During the flowering stage, the inflorescences often show visible deformations, including color breaking or petal malformation, which severely degrades the aesthetic quality of the plants.

The development and transmission of the virus are heavily dependent on insect vectors, mainly aphids, which transmit the pathogen while feeding on plant sap. Mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools is also a potential, albeit secondary, route of dissemination.

Controlling the spread of Campanula waikavirus requires a rigorous integrated pest management strategy. Since there is no cure for viral plant infections, protection relies on the following pillars:
