Rice tungro virus is a devastating viral disease complex, with Waikavirus oryzae acting as one of the primary components, causing significant yield losses in rice-growing regions worldwide. The disease is characterized by its systemic nature and rapid spread within agroecosystems.

The virus primarily affects rice (Oryza sativa). Due to its high transmissibility, it can affect large-scale plantations, leading to severe economic losses for farmers if management strategies are not implemented promptly during the early growth stages of the crop.
