Description
Watercress yellow is a destructive plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, specifically strains of Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris. These pathogens are microscopic, wall-less bacteria that inhabit the phloem of infected plants, effectively disrupting the translocation of photoassimilates and essential nutrients, which leads to the decline of the plant's health and eventual crop failure.
The primary host for this disease is watercress (Nasturtium officinale), although it also affects various other plants within the Brassicaceae family. Because the infection becomes systemic shortly after inoculation, the entire plant structure—including the root system and vascular tissues—becomes permanently colonized by the phytoplasma, making it impossible to cure once established.
Typical symptoms of this condition include generalized yellowing (chlorosis) of the foliage, stunted growth, and the development of distorted, pale leaves. In more advanced stages of infection, the plants exhibit severe loss of vigor, reduction in leaf size, and significant yield loss. The physiological collapse often results in the plant failing to produce marketable greens, rendering the crop entirely unsuitable for consumption.
Transmission of the disease is predominantly mediated by insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers. These insects feed on the phloem sap of infected weeds or crops, acquire the phytoplasma, and then introduce it into healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. The spread is facilitated by warm conditions and the presence of alternate host plants in the surrounding environment that harbor the pathogen.
Management strategies focus on vector control and rigorous sanitation practices. Farmers should implement integrated pest management (IPM) to control leafhopper populations, remove weeds from field margins, and source healthy, disease-free planting material. If an infection is identified, immediate rogueing of the affected plants is essential to reduce the inoculum pressure and prevent the further spread of the pathogen across the field.
