Yellow leaf blight, incited by the fungus Didymella maydis (synonym Phyllosticta maydis), is a significant foliage disease affecting maize crops worldwide. This pathogen specifically targets leaf tissues, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and significant agricultural losses if left unmanaged.

The primary host for this fungus is maize (Zea mays). While it predominantly affects leaves, it can impact the overall vigor of the plant, especially when environmental conditions are conducive to rapid fungal colonization during the critical stages of grain development.

The characteristic symptoms begin as small, yellow or pale lesions on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand into elongated, straw-colored spots often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In severe cases, the lesions coalesce, resulting in widespread leaf blighting and eventual death of the affected leaves.

The disease thrives in warm, humid environments, particularly following frequent rainfall or heavy morning dews that keep the canopy moist. The pathogen survives the winter in infected crop debris, which serves as the primary source of inoculum for the next growing season as spores are released and dispersed by wind and rain splash.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Growers should implement long-term crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum and practice deep tillage to bury residues. Furthermore, planting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids is the most sustainable approach, supplemented by foliar fungicides during periods of high disease pressure.
