Description
Maize dwarf mosaic virus, colloquially associated with the Zeavirus complex, is a highly destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus. It is responsible for significant yield losses in maize production globally, particularly where environmental conditions favor the proliferation of its insect vectors.
The host range of the virus includes maize, sorghum, and various wild grass species. These perennial weeds act as primary reservoirs, allowing the virus to survive the winter and persist in the agricultural landscape, ready to be transmitted to emerging crops in the following spring season.
The primary symptoms appear as irregular mosaic patterns, light and dark green mottling, and chlorotic streaks on the leaves. As the infection progresses, severe stunting of the plants occurs, often accompanied by poor ear development and reduced seed set, which directly impacts the overall harvest quality and quantity.
Transmission occurs through non-persistent interaction with aphid species. This means the vector transmits the virus mechanically from infected plants to healthy ones shortly after probing, making rapid spread possible even during brief feeding sessions on the leaves of the corn plants.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the eradication of host weeds near cultivated fields and the deployment of resistant or tolerant maize hybrids. Chemical control of aphids can serve as a supplementary measure, though it is often insufficient to fully prevent viral spread due to the nature of non-persistent transmission.
