On uneven terrain or working on slopes, standard header leveling can turn into a nightmare for the operator. The Claas Auto-Contour system is not just «automation»; it acts as the combine operator's tireless eyes and hands. Unlike standard copy systems, this setup hydraulically adjusts the header position in real-time, effectively «hugging» every bump in the field. For me as an operator, this means I can maintain a consistently low stubble height without the constant fear of sticking the cutter bar into the ground at the slightest elevation change.

Operation and Maintenance

In terms of maintenance, Auto-Contour is quite predictable. The main focus should be on sensors and hydraulics. If you keep the joints greased and monitor the potentiometers, the system won't give you much trouble. The biggest advantage is the ability to adjust sensitivity on the fly via the onboard computer. In heavy or lodged crops, I increase the reaction speed, while on flat plots, I «loosen» the system to reduce wear and tear on the hydraulics.

Sensor repair usually comes down to recalibration, and if they fail, replacement is straightforward. Claas parts are not cheap, but the ability to operate at high speeds without worrying about the terrain pays for itself within a single season.
