The breeding program by the Chernihiv IAES NAAS (Ukraine) focused on developing a low-growing lupin variety capable of maintaining structural integrity in constrained environments. 'Fakel' is a lupin variety with a fixed vegetative height of 30–35 cm, a morphology that defines its specialized use in landscape architecture.

Technical Parameters and Habit Stability

The primary advantage of this variety is the optimized balance between the root system and the above-ground biomass. At a height of 30–35 cm, the plant requires no staking or additional support, which is critical for precision in mixed border design. Unlike tall wild-type lupins, 'Fakel' maintains vertical stability even under wind pressure, virtually eliminating the risk of lodging.

Applications in Landscape Design

• Layering: Due to its controlled growth, the variety integrates perfectly into the foreground of flower beds without obstructing the view of larger perennials.
• Form Stability: The plant develops dense clumps that define the edges of a mixed border, creating clean lines within the composition.
• Adaptability: The variety shows excellent response to soil types typical of Ukrainian agro-climatic zones, making it suitable for both solitary planting and mass bedding.

The breeding strategy minimized the plant's energy expenditure on stem elongation, redirecting those resources into inflorescence development. This results in the dense, uniform flowering characteristic of the variety. Selecting 'Fakel' is a strategic decision for planners who require a predictable plant habit, ensuring minimal maintenance and the elimination of the need for structural pruning to manage height.
