Description
Lupin 'Orlovsky' is a variety of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.), early-maturing and mid-maturing depending on the region. The plant is erect, indeterminate, of medium height, with dark green leaves and white flowers, the keel tip of which is yellow. Pods of medium size contain white grain without ornamentation; at full maturity, the alkaloid content in the grain does not exceed 0.851%. The variety is characterized by a low level of bitter substances and a high content of crude protein – up to 23% in green mass and 34% in seeds.
The key advantage of 'Orlovsky' is its high nitrogen-fixing activity. When grown on sandy acidic soils, the plant fixes from 190 to 200 kg/ha of atmospheric nitrogen, which reduces the need for mineral fertilizer and increases dry matter yield (on average 40–52 ct/ha in various regions). The vegetative period is 85–90 days from germination to seed maturity. The variety is resistant to fusarium and also shows a weak reaction to anthracnose.
'Orlovsky' is widely used as a fodder crop due to its high protein potential and low alkaloid content. It is suitable for cultivation in Kaluga, Kursk, and Oryol regions, as well as in other regions with similar climatic conditions. Due to its ability to effectively absorb phosphorus and other elements from the soil, the lupin 'Orlovsky' contributes to improving soil fertility and can be used as part of perennial agroforestry systems or as a cover crop before planting more demanding plants.
